Ontonagon Fire gets new rescue truck

The Village of Ontonagon has been awarded a grant meant specifically for financially distressed municipalities that will allow it to purchase a new rescue truck. Trustee Mike Rebholz says that he was added to the council earlier this year, after the deadline had passed for most applications. This opportunity was still available, and Rebholz is thankful it has been accepted. He says that the document filed was supported by the entire area.

We sought out letters of support from surrounding area communities, because our fire department does indeed serve those communities as well.

The Ontonagon Fire Department played an integral role in helping to put out a sizable landfill fire that broke out this spring. After seeking clarification on some points, the state signed off on the grant. Rebholz reads from the letter the village received earlier this week.

“We are pleased to inform you that the proposal your governmental unit submitted entitled, “Ontonagon Fire Department Rescue Truck Replacement,” has been selected for a grant award in the maximum amount of $227,995 dollars.

State Representative Greg Markkanen applauded the decision in a release that is available below.

State Rep. Greg Markkanen today announced the village of Ontonagon has been awarded a state grant to help improve its water infrastructure.

The $227,995 grant will be used to help replace a fire department rescue truck.

“Our first responders work hard to protect our communities,” said Markkanen, of Hancock. “These state resources are going to be well spent making sure local firefighters have the tools they need to save lives.”

In total, $2.7 million is being awarded to 16 municipalities statewide through the Financially Distressed Cities, Villages and Townships (FDCVT) Grant Program. Municipalities can participate in the FDCVT Grant Program if they are experiencing one or more conditions indicative of “probable financial stress” as defined in state law. The grants fund specific projects, services or strategies – including infrastructure and public safety enhancements – that move a city, village or township toward financial stability.
