Several years ago Ontonagon started a new festival to celebrate the village’s copper mining history and community. During COVID, the Copper Fest was put on hiatus. This weekend the village intends to host the 8th annual Copper Fest. And will have a lot of activities for residents and visitors to the western Upper Peninsula. Ontonagon Chamber of Commerce Secretary Ann Lantz says that the village comes to life during events like Copper Fest.
This year, we have a kid’s game area down in the vacant lot next to Heritage Antiques. We have bounce houses, a petting zoo, a coin scramble, and a kids game on the hour, different kids games on the hour starting at 1 p.m. and with a coin scramble in there as well sponsored by Settlers Federal Credit Union. Live music all day long starting at noon and going to early hours of the morning. So we have an action-packed day on Saturday. It looks like the weather is going to be perfect so we couldn’t ask for anything better. – Ann Lantz, Secretary and Treasurer, Village of Ontonagon Chamber of Commerce
Many of the festival’s activities highlight various aspects of life in Ontonagon that make the village a special place to live. Such as lighthouse tours, bonfires on the beach tomorrow night, and a historic trail ride sponsored by MITRALE. Copper Fest will start tomorrow night with live music on the beach before bonfires and fireworks. Saturday’s activities will start at 10 am, with the Gitche Gumee Landing for kids, and the Veterans Day on the lake.
