One of two Calumet petitions will be on May ballot

Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Kelly says that she has been in contact with Calumet Village officials and the missing clerk petition was not resubmitted by Tuesday’s deadline. It was alleged to have been brought forward in August of last year by Peggy Germain, acknowledged by Clerk Dave Geisler, and is believed to have disappeared before ever reaching Township Clerk Beth Salmela.

A compromise was worked out at the last Village Council meeting to get the measure onto the ballot for a May special election if Germain was able to furnish a copy, something she said she is in possession of. Kelly says that has not happened.

I also called the Village of Calumet, left a message. [Manager] Amber [Goodman] just called me back from the Village. She said nothing was turned in.

Germain’s petition sought to ensure that Calumet would elect its clerk by popular vote and would have mandated that the position be filled by a village resident.

Virginia Dwyer submitted a similar petition last August regarding the village treasurer. She personally took her paperwork to Village Hall to be verified and then to the Township Office. Salmela noted the petition was in good standing on August 20th. That measure will be going before voters on May 3rd.
