Keeping culture alive takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Even miles on the road traveling to regional cultural festivals to show off the Copper Country’s Finnish Heritage. The Kivajat Dancers are a premiere dance group from the local area that practices and shares traditional Scandinavian dances, particularly those from Finland. Tonight the group will host the Old Time Copper Country Dance as the largest annual fundraiser for the Kivajat Dancers.
“This fundraiser is mainly to raise money for the dance group to travel to Stevens Point, Wisconsin The weekend of Mother’s Day weekend. They have an amazing festival there called the Portage County Cultural Festival And we have danced there maybe five or six times before We travel down on Friday night and then dance at the festival on Saturday and the families have just loved it. There are maybe 30 different ethnic groups there.” – Kay Seppala, Children’s Program Director, Kivajat Dancers
Proceeds from the evening will support the Kivajat Dancers’ travel expenses to Finn Fest in Duluth. Throughout the year the group offers dance courses with the Finnish folk school and performs at various festivals and special events in the area. Tickets for the Old-time Copper Country Dance this evening at the Finnish American Heritage Center cost 5 dollars. Kids under 14 can attend for free
