Michigan Technological University responded to concerns about a White House order to freeze grant and loan funds. Yesterday, the university provided a statement regarding a recent memo sent by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget.
“The University continues to carefully evaluate recent federal policy, memos, and directives from various federal agencies. As we work to determine how these might impact Michigan Tech, we can say that as a public university, we are committed to complying with applicable laws.”
Michigan Technological University manages 103.82 million in research expenditures through 15 institutions. In 2024 external funding accounted for 98.1 million dollars of research funding, about 78 percent coming from the federal government. By federal agency, the Department of Defense provides about a third of the university’s research funding. Close to 18 percent comes from the National Science Foundation, followed by the Department of Energy in 2024.
