Northern Michigan Unviersty Ranks as a Top College for Native American Students in the Country

Northern Michigan University Ranks as a Top College for Indigenous Americans in the County. Northern Michigan has recently been included in the American Indian Science and Engineering Society’s list of the top 200 colleges for Indigenous students published in the December college issue of Winds of Change Magazine. NMU’s Center for Native American Studies has previously earned recognition from society during the past decade.

Northern Michigan University is the only college in the state that offers a Native American studies bachelors degree program. The CNAS at NMU offers its bachelor’s degree, as well as a Native American services associate degree and minor, and master’s degree in Native American education administration. Students also have access to several resources on campus including a resource room for books, articles films, and other materials and the on-campus student group, the Native American Student Association. In 2021 the university erected a Land Acknowledgment marker on campus paying respect and recognizing Northern Michigan University’s place on ancestral Anishinaabe lands.

The Winds of Change Magazine’s special college issue is used by students, counselors, and teachers to help native American, native Alaskan, and native Hawaiian students choose paths for higher education. The issue has become a well-used resource among students seeking colleges and universities that want to pursue STEM fields as they consider options in higher education.
