Northern Michigan University Professor Emerita To Share Poems and Short Stories at the Copper Country Community Arts Center

The Copper Country Community Arts Center has invited Poet Laureate of the Upper Peninsula Beverley Matherne to share some of her works, and what inspires her to write.

Matherne, born I St James Parish, was raised and heavily influenced by her Cajun and Creole heritage. From a young age she would listen to her mother’s poems, and her father sing Cajun French songs, and recite Shakespeare.

Tonight the CCCAC will hear from Matherne read a selection of her works, mostly poetry, and short fiction, as well as a slide presentation that shares authors and artists who inspire her. Matherne newest collection of poems and stories are set in and around New Orleans, inspired directly by a group of paintings housed at the Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans.

Matherne’s background includes education in English and Drama, having attended Saint Louis University for her doctorate. She holds the title of Professor emerita of English at Northern Michigan University, serving as the director of the school’s Master of Fine Arts program.

Mathern’s poetry reading and meet and greet will begin at 5:30 pm this evening.
