Northern Michigan University invites indigenous artists to the inaugural Indigenous Perspectives Symposium in November

Northern Michigan University hosts the Indigenous Perspectives Symposium in November. The inaugural Indigenous Perspective Symposium will bring together native American artists from across the region to share perspectives on various forms of media. Keynote Pearker Johnathon Thunder from the Red Lake Ojibwe Tribe will present his journey as an Indigenous artist. Thunder has three installations and a fourth that will soon be on display.

During the symposium, attendees will hear from Thunder and other presenters, and participate in an indigenous-focused mural art project. As well as enjoy a luncheon with a decolonized menu while listening to music from Anishinaabe singer-songwriter Helen Roy. Other presenters at the symposium include Caroline LaPorte, NMU Department Head of the Center of Native American Studies, Director of the Ziibiwing Center, William Johnson, NMU Faculty member April Lindala, and co-owner of Deer Woman Productions Candice Dalsing.

The symposium will also include a screening of the Thunderheart Films production and Lily Gladstone narrated film, Bring Them Home. The Indigenous Perspectives Symposium at Northern Michigan University will take place on November 1st. Registration will begin at 8 am. Find more details here.
