Northern Michigan University Announces Tuition Rate Increases and New Programs Coming in Fall

Northern Michigan University’s Board of Trustees approves changes to tuition rates and adds new program opportunities. Yesterday Northern Michigan University announced the board of trustees has approved tuition rate increases that will support strategic goals to invest in the campus’ students, faculty and staff, infrastructure, and financial strength. While remaining an affordable and competitive option for higher education in the state of Michigan.

Undergraduate semester tuition rates will in the fall will increase by 351 dollars per semester, to 7197 dollars. Vice President of Finance and Administration Gavin Leach says that because the state’s budget process has not quite wrapped up, the university has developed the new rates based on the governor’s proposed 1.4 million dollar operational budget increase for NMU while remaining in compliance with the house and senate’s tuition restraint cap. Adding that if the restraint cap in the final budget is set lower the university will adjust the rates accordingly.

Northern Michigan University plans to invest in several areas of campus including removing barriers to education for prospective students with two new scholarship awards, with tuition advantage and the Bridge Award. NMU will also invest in its personnel with a memorandum of understanding between the university and a faculty union agreement signed in April. Vice Chair of the board’s finance committee Alexis Hart says the university continues to see positive outcomes through investments focused on sustainability, growth, and its people.

In addition to the university board of trustees approving tuition rate increases for the 2024 25 academic year, it added two new programs. Starting in the fall students will now have the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree in elementary education focused on pre-k to 3rd grade and 3rd-6th. As well as a new certificate program in crime scene investigation.
