Northern Michigan University and USA Weightlifting announce they will discontinue the program after the current semester finishes. The weightlifting program at Northern Michigan University began in 2003. And today includes eleven men and eight women competing under the coach, Tyler Depundyt. USA Weightlifting and the university’s Athletic Director cited changing dynamics in the sport, particularly with funding and training operations, since Northern Michigan University signed their original program agreement. USA Weightlifting CEO Matt Sicchio, noted that the program will not be renewed after May 6th. Northern Michigan University Athletic Director, Rick Comely, assures that student athletes affected by the program ceasing operation will still benefit from athletic scholarships, while they continue studies with the university.
