Northern Michigan University has produced many caring and dedicated educators over the years. This upcoming fall the university will seek to grow that reputation as it introduces a newly revised bachelor’s degree program with a dual endorsement major in Pre-K to 3rd and 3rd to 6th.
The revised program will prepare future educators to teach the core content areas of literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies aligning with the Michigan Department of Education Certification requirements with campus-based coursework and clinical experience. Associate Dean of Teacher Education Joe Lubig shared with the NMU Board of Trustees that districts hiring the college’s graduates are increasingly seeking individuals who can teach a range of ages. The program will have students complete 120 credit hours and 600 more hours of onsite training to earn a license in two separate areas. The university will also encourage students to complete license exams with the state of Michigan to help increase their chances of finding employment soon after graduating.
Across the Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Peninsula, adds Lubig, schools where individuals often student teach are seeking to fill a large demand for full-time teachers. NMU’s new program revises the university’s previous program for k-8th. The university will plan to also revise the secondary education over the summer.
