The United States Drug Enforcement Administration’s Detroit office is looking to mitigate the tidal surge of fentanyl finding its way onto Michigan’s streets. Operation Wave Breaker will help interdict and disrupt operations of the two prominent Mexican cartels who carry the narcotic into the country across our southern border.
Public Information Officer Brian McNeal says that it will also enhance the DEA’s role in local communities.
Fentanyl is becoming a greater problem in the area, due to the fact that dealers can get much better prices here than in major cities like Detroit or Chicago.
McNeal says 11 divisions in the country intercept approximately 85 percent of the fentanyl confiscated by law enforcement agencies. That includes the Detroit district, even though it is thousands of miles from the drug’s entry point.
McNeal says Asia is the primary source of the chemicals that are synthetically used to manufacture fentanyl. “Mexican cartels produce fentanyl and methamphetamines on an industrial scale using precursor chemicals from China, India and elsewhere.” It is extremely potent even in very small doses.
