The National Parks of Lake Superior Foundation, responsible for supporting Grand Portage National Monument, the Apostle Islands, the Keweenaw National Historical Park, Isle Royale, and Pictured Rocks, has a new documentary. Return of the Wolves: Lessons from the Wilderness was released earlier this month and Executive Director Tom Irvine says it is available through the organization’s website, nplsf.org.
Irvine says there are few animals that capture the imagination of the general public like the gray wolf. His foundation fields queries about the predators from around the globe. For that reason, it made sense to create the film and pair it with educational materials to be used in school.
Irvine says the group used to be headquartered in Houghton and is very active in support of the area’s national parks. He has served as board president, and now executive director, since joining in 2019. During that time frame, the park system has seen a swell of traffic. Only Isle Royale, limited by the number of transportation options available, has been immune from a crush of visitors. Pictured Rocks will be implementing an admission system this summer to try and help park infrastructure catch up to the strains created from the extra visitors.
