New art pieces add color to Houghton

It began as an advertisement for the Downtowner Motel, sitting at the Houghton County Memorial Airport and greeting those arriving to the area. Now the replica model of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, constructed from sheet copper and fully mechanized, has a new home. Manager Eric Waara highlighted City Center’s newest addition at Wednesday’s council meeting.

If you noticed on your way in, we got a generous donation of that bridge model from Mr. Bob Long, who had that model built years ago. It’s out in the hallway there.

World of Wood provided the display case for the hand-built diorama. It is tucked just inside the entrance to the city offices.

Lori Sleeman returned four panels for a new downtown mural. Given the greenhouse in town that coincidently shares her name, it’s fitting that flowers and nature’s beauty are the highlights of Sleeman’s pieces. Sleeman’s adult art class will be producing plenty more, as many as 16 additional panels that are expected to be put up around town as summer nears.

Four mural panels on display in council chambers. They will be hung around town soon.
