Visitors to the Houghton County marina in Ripley will be greeted by a new fixture. Copper Country ISD students designed and made a metal anchor that has been affixed to a concrete slab underneath the welcome sign. Welding Instructor Tim Stites and Machining Teacher Jordan Schulz said that they love to do community projects like this, because it gives them the chance to give back to an area that provides excellent facilities for the students.
The two like to operate their shop as if it were a real business, rather than just an academic exercise. They talked about how teams of students each perform specific tasks. Stites describes their system.
To ensure that the 3/16″ metal sculpture will survive for the long term, Wildwood Coating of Dollar Bay finished the piece with an American flag paint scheme. The last accessory was a rope provided by the United States Coast Guard.
The anchor was debuted Wednesday afternoon at a county employee picnic.
