Narcotics selling at a premium in the Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team has racked up an impressive string of drug arrests in recent months. Lieutenant Timothy Sholander says that a large percentage of the investigations his team deals with involves product coming from other places. As such, the investigations are often conducted at the state, or even federal, levels. That means apprehensions can be years in the making at times and it can make it difficult to speak to immediate trends.

Sholander says there is one major reason for why narcotics have become more prevalent here over a longer time horizon.

The price of a tenth of a gram of heroin is, in Detroit, maybe $5 or $10, but if you sell that same tenth of a gram of heroin here in the Upper Peninsula it could go for $50 to $70.

UPSET works by coordinating resources at the local and county level through the Michigan State Police to tackle the narcotics trade.
