MTU Men Defeat NMU; Women Fall – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
In girls high school basketball last night…
– Houghton remained unbeaten by defeating L’Anse 74-53. Sloane Zenner has 12 points and eight steals for the Gremlins. Bailey Froberg of the Purple Hornets led all scorers with 24 points.
– Calumet outscored Hancock 64-40. Hailey Wickstrom led the Copper Kings with 19 points and 16 rebounds. D’Andra Kero hit five treys to lead the Bulldogs with 15 points.
– Jeffers shut down Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 53-35.
– Baraga led by 10 at halftime, the held on to edge Chassell 44-42.
– Ontonagon downed Republic-Michigamme 58-43.

In boys play last night, Ontonagon defeated Watersmeet 53-43.

In boys action tonight…

– Hancock welcomes Bessemer.
– Calumet plays host to Negaunee in a game that was rescheduled from December 8th because of weather.

– Baraga plays at L’Anse.

Winter

MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team lost to Northern Michigan 66-55 last night. The Huskies were stone-cold early, scoring just six points in the first quarter. They recovered in the second quarter, and trailed by just two points at halftime. Another dry spell in the third quarter cost them the game. Lindsey Winter led Tech with 15, as the Wildcats held Morgan Anderson to just four points.

Monroe

Kyle Monroe scored 33 points, as the MTU men’s team defeated NMU 76-62. The Huskies led by four at halftime, and pulled away early in the second half.

Anderson

For the third time this season, Morgan Anderson of the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has been chosen at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week. Anderson scored 40 points in the Huskies’ wins over Ferris State and Grand Valley State, including the game-winner in the final second against the Lakers.

Sturos

The MTU hockey team is back in the national rankings. The Huskies placed 20th in the latest USCHO poll.

Michigan Tech forward Reid Sturos has been named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week. Sturos had two shorthanded goals in Friday’s victory over Alabama-Huntsville, and added an assist in Saturday’s shootout win.

Drummond

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost their third straight game last night, falling to the Boston Celtics 113-109. Andre Drummond led Detroit with 28 points and 22 rebounds. Detroit made only three of 27 three-point attempts. The Pistons host the New Orleans Pelicans tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Howard

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings return to action tonight at home against the New Jersey Devils. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Goaltender Jimmy Howard returned to practice with the Wings yesterday, He’s been out since December 20th with a knee injury. If things go well, the next step would be a conditioning assignment with the Grand Rapids Griffins for a couple of games.

The Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots will play in the Super Bowl on Sunday. Pregame coverage begins at 2:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
