The high school softball tournament opens today…
– In Division Four at the Hancock Driving Park, L’Anse faces the Gogebic Miners at 1:00, Hancock takes on Jeffers at 3:00, and Lake Linden-Hubbell meets Ishpeming at 5:00. Hear all three games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Detroit Tigers scored four runs in the eighth inning, as they came from behind to defeat the Kansas City Royals 10-7 last night. The Tigers fell behind early, as the Royals scored a run in the third, and two in the fourth, off starter Daniel Norris. They surged back with six runs in the fifth inning, powered by a Victor Martinez double and a J.D. Martinez home run. K-C responded with two in the sixth, and reclaimed the lead with two more off Francisco Rodríguez in the seventh. RBI singles by Alex Pressley and Miguel Cabrera fueled Detroit’s four-run rally in the eighth.

Garza

The Tigers continue that series at Kansas City tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Eric Skoglund. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:50 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 4-2 to the New York Mets yesterday. Matt Garza pitched four shutout innings, but the Mets broke through with three in the fifth, and added an insurance run in the sixth. Domingo Santana homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers face the Mets in New York again tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Tyler Pill, who will be making his first major league start.

NHL
The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Nashville Predators 5-3 in the opening game of the Stanley Cup series last night. Game two will be played tomorrow night in Pittsburgh.

Stanton Five-Mile
The Stanton Five-Mile Walk/Run is scheduled for Saturday. It will cover a course from the Houghton Breakers to the Kenner Dome. The walk begins at 8:30, and the run at 9:00. There will also be a free kids’ dash at the Kenner Dome. Parking is available at the Kenner Dome, with shuttle bus service to the Breakers. For full details and online registration, click here.

MTU
Michigan Tech will introduce its new head hockey coach this morning at 9:30. The school will hold a press conference on the concourse level of the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.The event is open to the public and fans can sit in the arena seating and watch on the video board. Husky hockey fans can watch the press conference for free on Facebook here. There will be a reception in the suites after the press conference to welcome the 22nd coach of the Michigan Tech hockey team.

Finlandia women’s basketball coach John Motherwell has introduced his coaching assistants. Zach Baids worked with Motherwell last season at Valparaiso. Chad Brenna has been a high school coach in the Duluth area. Rodney Palmer has been the head coach at Williamston High School in lower Michigan.
