On Saturday during the Chassell Strawberry Festival you can check out how MTU researchers operate and go about their duties aboard the Agassiz. The research vessel will dock at the Chassell Marina and start their first departure at 12:30 pm. The lat excursion to go out will leave at 5 pm. Room is limited aboard the ship, as half the spots have already been reserved. It is best to arrive to the dock early for each excursion so the Agassiz can leave on time, and give many people a chance to see what researchers do on the lake. While on board the Agassiz, attendees will learn from MTU Great Lakes Research Scientist, Kenny Larsen, how crews collect data on water clarity and temperature and explain what the health of the lake is near Chassell Bay. Director of the Center for Science and Environmental Outreach, Joan Chadde, began the working excursion in with festival organizers in 2006, and says that it has grown to become very popular among kids and adults. Stop by the Chassell Marina on Saturday during the Strawberry Festival to learn more about Great Lakes research and the Agassiz research vessel.
