Movie screening locally is a surprise box office hit

The Chosen is a Christian entertainment group that streams episodes online and has developed a healthy following, including locally says Evangel Community Church Pastor Travis Williams.

We’ve got a lot of members at the church that are pretty big fans of the Chosen show. We just reached out to the company that was working with them to stream the special Christmas program. We were able to connect with them and get a license to be able to show it for two shows.

Their most recent production is holiday-themed, told from the perspective of Mary and Joseph. Christmas With the Chosen is in theatres for only 10 days and it surprised mightily, landing in the top five last weekend at a limited number of locations. Deadline: Hollywood dedicated a portion of its weekend wrap up to the film’s results.

“Getting a big shout for the weekend is Fathom Events’ faith-based Christmas With the Chosen, in 1,642 theaters and 194 markets, which rivals are raising their eyebrows at. The movie, comprised of new and classic Christmas songs from the set of The Chosen, opened Wednesday and is expected to gross $9M in five days, $4.1M of that Friday-Sunday. The South and the Midwest were big, with top markets being Dallas, Houston, Detroit, Phoenix, Minnesota, Denver, Cleveland, Orlando, Sacramento, and St. Louis.”

Box office results still remain generally weak in North America. The leading film was Disney’s Encanto, posting $12.7 million over three days. Christmas With the Chosen will be shown at Evangel Community Church tomorrow at 6:30 and Saturday at 1:30.
