Mom Prom Supports Families with the High Cost of Adoption

Mom Prom Keweenaw proudly returns to the Keweenaw Peninsula to support adoptive families in the region. Next week Mom Prom Keweenaw will invite the ladies of the Copper Country to a special night of dancing, refreshments, and a night away from the husband and kids. The event returned last year after a short hiatus when the Mom Prom was canceled during the pandemic.

“So a group of women got together to come up with fundraising ideas and the idea of a Mom Prom came up and so that’s how they raised funds to support that family and the event was so well attended that they decided to do it again the next year. So we’ve created an adoption fund now that is there year-round for families who are going through the adoption process and need some financial support. So that’s what the event does it builds that financial fund for families in the area.” – Jennifer Wall, Marketing Coordinator, Mom Prom Keweenaw

Mom Prom Keweenaw Marketing Coordinator Jenn Wall says that since 2015 the group has partnered with UP Kids to build a fund available to families interested in adoption.

“And we work together with them to identify families who have financial needs. We don’t want the financial costs of adoption to be what stops children from finding a home. So the cost, because they can be anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars, this fund, there’s nothing like it in the area. And we do want to help families become families.” – Jennifer Wall, Marketing Coordinator, Mom Prom Keweenaw

Mom Prom has raised over 25,000 dollars over the past decade to support families willing to adopt a child. Wall says that the cost of adoption can cost thousands of dollars. The funds raised by the group greatly help adoptive families cover some of the costs, such as transportation.

“So there are adoptions where parents do need to work with agencies outside of the UP. And so those travel costs can be quite expensive because you do want to make sure there’s a good connection between the child and the family. And so you don’t just adopt a child that’s older, you want to connect with that child. So we want to make sure that families can go and meet that child and go through that process so that it is a successful process.” – Jennifer Wall, Marketing Coordinator, Mom Prom Keweenaw

Mom Prom next week will take place at the Rozsa Center at Michigan Tech. Tickets for the fundraising night cost 65 dollars each. This year’s theme, Puttin’ on the Ritz, will bring out the glitz and glam of the roaring 1920’s.
