Mitchell Peterson spent nine years away from home. But has returned to the are with a goal. To reconnect with his family and learn from his 18 Uncles. Peterson spent the past few years working and studying in Spain. But felt a calling to come back to the Keweenaw Peninsula, and be closer to family. While packing, he mulled over an idea to find out more about his father, his uncles, and the lives they lived growing up in the Upper Peninsula.
“While they’re all here, I’m going to track them down. But secondary, or like part two of the primary goal, is to learn more about my father. Because as an 11 year old, of course i have memories. A lot of them, I’m not sure if they’re mine, or are from home videos, pictures and that stuff. And I guess with maturity I’ve realized, or I’ve sen it from the perspective of my uncles. How they lost a friend. They knew my father for 20 years, 25 years for some of them.” Mitchell Peterson, Author, 18 Uncles
Peterson plans to interview each of his 18 uncles and discover how they chose to live their lives. And the lessons that they might pass onto their children, and himself. He says that he hopes people interested in learning about rural America may take away new perspectives over the course of the series. He plans to publish his first interview over the weekend. He says he hopes to put each interview into a book when completed. Those interested in hear more about the 18 uncles series from Mitchell Peterson can find links to the series here.
