Missing Alston man found dead

Howard Maki’s body was discovered Sunday afternoon after an extensive search. Numerous agencies and organizations engaged in an operation centered around the Alston Cemetery after Maki’s vehicle had been found two days earlier on Trail #109.

The efforts ended at 1:15 yesterday when a Houghton County Sheriff’s deputy and a member of the Superior Search and Rescue team came across the body just under two miles away from the abandoned car. All indications are that Maki’s remains had been at that location for several days, and no foul play is suspected.

The 80-year-old Maki suffered from dementia and was last seen alive on June 7th in Hancock.

Helping to look for Maki were the Michigan State Police-Calumet Post K9 unit, Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police K9 unit, Houghton County’s Office of Emergency Measures, Superior Search and Rescue, Baraga County Search and Rescue, Laird Township Fire Department, Pelkie Fire Department, and several other volunteers.
