Minigrants boost school gardens

COVID-19 has changed the plans of the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative, Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and Keweenaw Land Trust. Initially envisioned as a collaboration for last year, Joan Chadde says that instead, a series of minigrants have been awarded to several area schools and organizations. Eleven groups received $75 each for a range of projects.

Chadde goes through some of the initiatives.

Portage Lake District Library is gonna buy gardening books, which is awesome. EB Holman School actually purchased grow lights, which is a great thing to have so that you can get started on plants for your garden. Another one they did is planting lavender, which is a really nice herb.

Chadde says that gardening is a popular learning tool in the Keweenaw because of the well-rounded education it provides.

Gardening, it’s such a great way for students to learn so many things. When you’re working in the garden, you are thinking about soil and soil characteristics, and how can you either improve the texture or fertility of your soil. You’re watching about the weather and thinking about what insects are here.

Some pictures of students at Baraga Elementary and E. B. Holman School are below along with a list of all of the winning organizations.
