Baraga’s Lumberjack days stretch back many years as a way to celebrate the community. The First was held Fourth of July weekend in 1969. Then the festival adopted the moniker Lumberjack Days in 1970. Over the years the festival has had a variety of ways to celebrate Baraga Township, oftentimes including an Annual Lumberjack Dance, logging games, Crowning a lumberjack queen, and of course a grand parade. The 2024 Grand Parade Marshall will honor long-time community volunteer and leader Mike Bianco.
For several years he owned the Hilltop Motel with his brothers Dave and Dan Bianco. Then began working with the Village of L’Anse police department in 1977. Over the years of working with the Village of L’Anse Mike Bianco also became a fire truck driver, and worked as an equipment operator for the village garage. In 2022 he was named volunteer firefighter of the year for his efforts with the L’Anse Fire Department, and work with the Copper Country Volunteer Firefighters Association. Mike Bianco has lived much of his life in service to his community as a lifelong resident.
The Baraga Township Lumberjack Days will begin Wednesday afternoon and will introduce the 2024 Lumberjack Day honorees including Mike Bianco at 7:30 pm. The Grand parade will take place on Tuesday the 4th at 3:30 pm.
