Michigan Tech’s Winter Carnival starts tomorrow

The all-nighter is next month, but that doesn’t stop Winter Carnival from getting underway on campus tomorrow. The first special event begins Saturday morning. Snow volleyball begins on the softball diamonds off Sharon Avenue at 10:00. Snow soccer starts at 1:00 on Sunday afternoon on the recreation fields next to the Student Development Complex. All weekend long there is a curling tournament at the Drill House in Calumet.

2022 marks the 100th anniversary of Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech. It was run by the Student Organization until 1929 and the onset of the Great Depression. For four years no Carnival took place, but the organization of a chapter of the Blue Key Honor Society at Michigan Tech provided the seed to bring it back. In 1936, snow statues were built for the first time and many of the traditions associated with the event began to come together.

Blue Key is open to all students beginning in their second year, assuming they meet minimum GPA requirements.
