Michigan Tech’s Foundations in Cyber Security Certificate Program Encourages Students Entering the Industry

The global rise of cyber attacks over the past decade has grown in sophistication, frequency, and size. At the same time, cyber security leaders say that many organizations are struggling to fill positions. In 2023 the global cyber security employment gap passed 4 million workers according to a workforce study conducted by the International Information System Certification Consortium. The World Economic Forum anticipates more than 85 million positions in cyber security could open worldwide by 2030.

Michigan Technological University’s College of Computing has been a leader in the industry, developing students into cyber security professionals. To help close the industry’s current vacancies the university offers a certificate course in the Foundations of Cyber security for both in-person and online sessions. The nine-credit program teaches students how to identify and describe the foundational principles of securing a computer system and computer network. Students also learn the fundamentals of software development and how to apply knowledge effectively.
