Michigan Tech student arrested on child porn charges

22-year-old Dominic Zavaglia has been arrested on charges of Aggravated Child Sexually Abusive Material and Using a Computer to Commit a Crime. During a search of his Hancock residence, city police and Michigan State Police’s Computer Crimes Unit were able to retrieve over a thousand photos and videos containing suspected child pornography from Zavaglia’s numerous electronic devices.

The Iron River, Wisconsin native was enrolled at Michigan Technological University at the time information was received resulting in an investigation. The warrant was executed on December 16th, 2021 with arraignment happening Monday in 97th District Court. Bond was set at $25,000 and Zavaglia has been released from custody after posting the appropriate amount.

Update: Keweenaw Report reached out to the 97th District Court. Zavaglia’s bond was initially set at $25,000 but was subsequently raised to $250,000. He is not allowed to have unsupervised contact with minors, and computer usage has been limited. Zavaglia is not permitted to leave the State of Michigan except to return home to Iron River, Wisconsin.

Michigan Penal Code Section 750.145c defines aggravated child sexual abuse as involving “a prepubescent child, sadomasochistic abuse or bestiality” or including “a video or more than 100 images of child sexually abusive material.” The maximum potential sentence is 25 years in prison and a fine of $125,000.
