Michigan Tech Sets New School Record on Research Expenses

Michigan Tech University has a reputation around the country and globe, as a top tier engineering and research institution. To maintain their prowess among the nation’s best, the school must spend so much money to conduct research on a very large number of fields. In 2022, the school spent a record amount of money for that research, estimated at nearly 96 million dollars. Spending nearly 20% more than last year’s, 81.7 million dollars.

Michigan Tech consistently ranks among the lowest student populations, of the state’s 15 public universities, but has always been a top spender on undergraduate and graduate research. Health research by the university grew 217% from last year, demonstrating the need for school’s Heath Research Institute that began construction this summer. Over the past two decades the school has quadrupled research expenditures, of this year’s funding. The schools has done well to leverage funding, as federal sources account for 78% of research dollars. And while the numbers look good, the university has grown more proud of the work done by students, than the financial figures.
