It has been a couple of years since Michigan Tech researchers have been able to conduct studies on Isle Royale. This past winter a team was successful in completing population counts for wolves and moose on the island. The researchers observed that Isle Royale’s two wolf packs are gaining a foothold, after being trans-located to the park in 2018 and 19. Additionally the team observed that moose populations have dropped by 28 percent. Just over eight percent of the moose deaths resulted from conflicts with wolves. The biggest problems for the moose on Isle Royale are blood sucking winter ticks, and a spruce budworm infestation that has affected the island’s balsam fir population. Winter studies are supported by funding from the National Park Services, the National Science Foundation and the Detroit Zoological Society.
