Michigan Tech Releases Results of the Winter Isle Royale Study

After a hectic winter study season Michigan Tech researchers have released findings from this year. The Michigan Tech University Isle Royale Wolf and Moose study ended its time on the island early this past winter due to unseasonable warm temperatures, and a lack of safe ice conditions for flights. The pull-out from the island was the first time the study required researchers to leave early for the first time in 65 years, apart from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual winter study concludes with evidence of three new wolf litters and four territorial packs in the park. The study also finds that Isle Royale’s moose population has seen a significant drop in mortality rates attributed to starvation. While moose deaths from predation were up. Those interested in learning more about the Isle Royale wolf moose study and this past winter’s experience can find more details here.
