Michigan Tech increases ties with downstate district

The Leelanau Peninsula is already well-represented on campus, and those bonds have only gotten stronger this week. Michigan Technological University announced Wednesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS). That formalizes a bond with the district, which will help to supply science, technology, and mathematics students to the university.

Director of School Improvement Heidi Maltby-Skodack says the arrangement is something new for Traverse City, but if it goes well it could become a model for other collaborations in the future.

Michigan Tech has several wonderful summer programs, youth programs, that they offer. Last year they actually helped with our Super Science Saturday where the Michigan Tech Roadshow actually came down. Lots of opportunities to expand there.

TCAPS graduates will be eligible for a $1,000 per year while attending Tech. Maltby-Skodack hints at the possibility of the university providing exclusive lectures and other academic content for use at the high school level.
