Michigan State Police are urging caution after at least four people have fallen through the ice on Lake Gogebic since last Friday.
A 40-inch ice heave running east-to-west, about 2 miles south of Ontonagon County Park, was also reported on the lake Monday afternoon.
According to a spokesperson for MSP, a snowmobile rider was rescued after her vehicle fell through the ice around 10:30 p.m.
The woman was unhurt and taken somewhere nearby to warm up, and her snowmobile was retrieved from the water.
On Monday morning, the MSP spokesperson said DNR officers reported two more snowmobilers had gone through the ice Sunday night, and another the next day.
“If you are heading out onto the ice, your safety is your responsibility. Ice conditions can change, so stay alert and stay safe,” said the MSP spokesperson. “The strongest ice is clear with a bluish tint, while weak ice is formed by melted and refrozen snow and appears milky.”
