Houghton’s path to winning the Michigan Municipal League’s Community Excellence Award in 2024 was unique. The city focused on its residents and volunteers who helped create a place people want to be in the downtown. Many municipalities focus on the concrete, infrastructure, and funding to reinvigorate the community when going for state awards. Houghton’s focus on what the community accomplished after the pavement was settled showed what a community can do with a few resources and hard work.
The city’s presentation was also unique in comparison to other nominees for the community excellence award. While leaders from Brighton, Oak Park, and Grandville used video presentations, Houghton’s city manager Eric Waara narrated the city’s presentation live. Recently the Michigan Municipal League shared Houghton’s presentation online, making a copy available to the public.
