Using a Sauna to relax and escape has been practiced by Finnish Americans in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for many years. Now the state will recognize the practice’s importance to Michigan’s communities with an official Sauna Week. Coinciding with National Sauna Week, Michigan’s Sauna Week will be from February 18th to the 24th.
“A sauna bath or steam bath in Michigan has been a tradition among Finnish-Americans in the Upper Peninsula. And it’s a tradition that has spread around the world today. Please rise and support the resolution. Thank you.” – Greg Markkanen, 110th District Representative, Michigan House of Representatives
“The question for the House is the adoption of the house resolution 186. All of those in favor say aye (aye). Those opposed, nay (silence). The resolution is adopted.” – Laurie Pohutsky (Dis. 17), Speaker Pro Tem, Michigan House of Representatives
Sauna Week in Michigan encourages residents to enjoy the Finnish tradition if they never have before. The week also acts as an excuse to spend more time in the cedar steam room for those who already take advantage of the benefits of a sauna.
