Michigan DNR Shares Fire Safety Information Ahead of the Fourth of July

Michigan DNR reminds residents and visitors of fire safety before the Fourth of July. Fourth of July celebrations often include loud and bright explosions in the sky in the form of fireworks. However, fireworks are not the only fire hazard the DNR keeps in mind this time of year. Fire hazards during the fourth of July can also occur while huddled around a campfire or flipping patties on the grill for the family. Fire prevention specialist Paul Rogers says that nine out of ten fires are caused by people. Making caution around fireworks, campfires, and grills is necessary, especially while outdoors. He adds not to shoot fireworks into wooded areas or tall grass. And it is also important to check local ordinances.

Around the campfire, the DNR suggests building the fire ring on dry bare ground, away from low-hanging braches or small trees. Afterward, douse the fire out with a bucket of water, and watch for embers or coals that are faintly red. For debris burns the DNR asks residents to make sure they’ve acquired a permit, keep a water source nearby, and keep a 10-foot wide perimeter between the fire and other logs or objects.

When cooking with a propane grill inspect all hoses and the tank, and keep the grill lid open before igniting. And keep the grill away from the side of the home or deck railing. Those using charcoal should not use additional lighter fluid after igniting the charcoal. Never add flammable liquids or mixtures to a fire already burning. Let the coal burn completely out before disposing. Never leave a grill unattended.
