The Michigan Department of Natural Resources suggests planting new trees in the fall. My UP News correspondent Rebecca Bartleme shares steps to take when adding a tree to your property.

Here are some key reasons you should start planting trees this fall. Optimal root growth. With cooler temperatures and increased moisture, trees can establish strong roots before winter sets in. Less stress on trees. Fall planting reduces the stress on young trees, allowing them to thrive in their new environment and long-term benefits. Trees planted in the fall often have a head start in the spring, resulting in healthier and more resilient growth. They also have some tips on how to make planting a success.

Choose native species for better adaptability. Make sure to water thoroughly after planting. Mold around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. And the right size, right place. Consider the tree’s ultimate height and reach. Avoid planting under power lines or too close to your house to ensure healthy growth and safety. If you do plant trees, you can join thousands of other Michiganders by placing them on their map at michigan.gov/MITREES
