The Michigan Department of Transportation will begin annual bridge inspections on several western Upper Peninsula bridges next week.
Starting with the busiest bridge in Houghton County crews will inspect the Portage Lake Lift Bridge through Wednesday. On Monday the outside northbound lane will close from 8:30 to 11:30 am and again from 1 to 3 pm. The outside southbound lane will close on Tuesday at the same times during the day. Then Wednesday northbound and southbound right lanes will close for inspections between 8:30 to 11:30 am and from 1 to 3 pm.
On Thursday MDOT crews will inspect three bridges, one over the Firesteel River on M-38 from 8 am to 9:30 am, and the bridge over the east branch of the Ontonagon River on us-45 from 11 am to 2 pm. The final bridge inspection on Thursday will look at the m-28 bridge over the Ontonagon River from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
Friday’s bridge inspections include the US-41 bridge over the Sturgeon River from 8 am to 10 am. Then westbound on US – 2 at the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Bridge from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
