The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation recently announced it has received 5.6 million dollars in grants from the Walmart Acres for America program. The 5.6 million dollars in funds split across ten grants will support conservation efforts of 148,000 acres of forestlands in nine states. The 5.6 million dollars of funding also leverages over 100 million in public and private matching funds for those districts.
One of the conservation projects to earn a portion of the Acres for America funding includes the Michigamme Highlands project. In September 2022 the Michigan DNR submitted an application request for funding from the USDA for the 2024 Forest Legacy program. The Michigamme Highlands include some of Michigan’s most important natural geography including the state’s highest point, Mount Arvon. In partnership with the Lyme Great Lakes Timberlands the Michigan DNR is working to source funding to protect the 73,000 acres in Baraga Iron and Marquette counties.
