Memorial Day travel expected to rebound

AAA expects fireworks to start the summer travel season in Michigan. Last year suffered from COVID-19 restrictions, with fewer than 700,000 people on the state’s roadways for Memorial Day weekend. Forecasts have that ballooning back above one million, a 53 percent jump. The increase is even more dramatic for airports. Over 46,000 will head into terminals for a flight out of town versus a scant 6,949 in 2020.

AAA defines travel as commuting in some fashion at least 50 miles from home. Vice President of Travel Debbie Haas says the bounce back is partly due to pent up demand. Another factor is a growing sense of optimism about COVID-19.

We’re hearing through our research that over 70 percent of people feel comfortable traveling now, so we know it’s going to be a very busy summer.

Nationwide, over 37 million Americans plan to use a plane, train, or automobile for Memorial Day.
