The snow is melting and another construction season moves in. Last year work by MDOT cold be found on nearly every road across the Upper Peninsula. This summer, the agency hopes travel will go smoother with less big projects on the docket. In the local area, the largest project is Phase II of College Avenue. MDOT will have north-bound traffic on US-41 travel their typical route for the start of work.
While southbound travelers will re route to Sharon Avenue, coming out on US-41 off MacInnis Drive. Other work in the region includes resurfacing near Lake Linden, Dollar Bay, and L’Anse. Work at the Silver River Culvert in Keweenaw County will not start until 2023, traffic signals in that area will remain in place for now.
Other projects that are happening in the Houghton-Hancock area include demolition of the parking deck. Houghton hopes to reconfigure parking in the city, as a part of the parking deck’s work. As the current set up could be more effiecent for downtown shoppers, residents and visitors. Another section of work in the city is on the new pier. Houghton City Manager Eric Waara said that construction should finish in late summer, as delays with AT&T pushed work back a couple of weeks. In Hancock the largest area of construction is their new business and technology park. The total project is costing $3.4 million, and the final designs have been submitted. Hancock’s City Manager Mary Babcock hopes to bid out the project around the start of May. And many residents are excited to get back to the Maasto Hiihto Trails, Hancock is in the final stage of FEMA work in that area. Repairs there have been a long time coming, as there is a large mix of private and public property owners impacted by the FEMA work. Those repairs to the trails will not cost Hancock anything.
