Marquette County Undersheriff Daniel Willey Dies following a Short Illness

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office reports undersheriff Daniel Willey has passed away following a short illness.

He graduated from Ishpeming High School and earned an associate degree in Criminal Justice from Northern Michigan University. Undersheriff Willey grew up in Ishpeming and served with the United States Air Force as a security policeman until 1986. During his career with the Ishpeming Police department, he rose through the ranks, starting as a patrolman and becoming the chief of police. In 2005 he was named the Marquette County Police Officer of the Year as a Detective Sergeant with the department. In 2017 Marquette Sheriff Gregory Zyburt appointed Willey to the role of Undersehriff. He played a key role in the department’s day-to-day operations, led several high-profile investigations, and was responsible for grant writing to bring training program opportunities to officers. The Marquette County Sheriff expressed the department’s condolences and prayers with Undersheriff Willey’s family.
