Marquette County fire highlights risks

A 35-acre wildfire broke out in Sands Township Tuesday, near Goose Lake. Overnight rain help officials get the “Gravel Pit Fire” contained, but the Keweenaw missed most of that precipitation. Only a half inch is expected in total between today and Sunday, not enough to offset the warm, windy conditions that have been the rule in the recent past.

With RVs already beginning to fill up campgrounds, fire prevention should be top of mind. Campfires do have the capability of turning into something far worse. Some tips include never leaving your site unattended. Always keep water and a shovel nearby so that you can bring stray embers under control before they ignite grass and the surrounding habitat.

The Department of Natural Resources also urges caution when disposing of brush. This pertains especially to those making their first trip to their second home or cabin. Even with green returning on the trees, dead wood and dry leaves can be the spark for a blaze.
