The boys high school basketball tournament opens tonight.

Northern Michigan University’s hockey season ended with a 3-1 loss to Bemidji State in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinal series Sunday evening. The Beavers won the series two games to one.

The best-of-three semifinal series will be played next weekend. Second-seed Michigan Tech will host third-seed Minnesota State. Top-seed Bemidji State will entertain fourth-seed Bowling Green.

Avila

Finlandia
Kassandra Avila threw a no-hitter, as the Finlandia University softball team closed its Florida trip with a pair of victories yesterday. Avila’s gem came in the opening game, an 11-0 win over Mount Ida College. Avila struck out five and walked just one to record the fifth no-hitter in Lions history. In the second game, Finlandia defeated Saint Elizabeth 12-3. Avila had three hits.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Toronto tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Wings will be without defenseman Ryan Sproul for a while. He sprained his knee in Saturday’s loss in Calgary. An MRI tomorrow should reveal more about how serious the injury is. Detroit has called Robbie Russo up from Grand Rapids.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will host the Chicago Bulls tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ spring training woes continued yesterday, with an 8-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Daniel Norris pitched three scoreless innings, and left with a 4-0 lead. Mark Lowe, Shane Greene and Bruce Rondon were among those who struggled in relief. The Tigers will face the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Colorado Rockies 9-4 in Cactus League play Sunday. Keon Broxton and Hernan Perez homered. The Brewers will face the Cleveland Indians this afternoon.

CopperDog 150
The CopperDog 150 crowned its first female champion yesterday. Anny Malo from Saint-Zénon, Québec, edged out 2011 champion Ross Fraboni by just two seconds to take the title in her first appearance in the event. Fraboni took the lead after a strong run in the opening stage Friday night. He was still in first place when stage three began yesterday morning, but fell just short of clinching the win. Martha Schouweiler finished third.

Veteran musher Geri Minard won the two-stage CopperDog 80, finishing 39 seconds ahead of 15-year-old Tristan Rivest. Alex LaPlante took third place.
