M/V Michipicoten Taking on Water South West of Isle Royale

UPDATE6/8/24 12:30 pm: The U.S. Coast Guard reports that half of the M/V Michipicoten’s crew has been removed from the vessel safely. The ship is en route to a nearby port for inspections and repairs. The cause of the flooding will be investigated after it has been stabilized. The bulk carrier Edwin H Gott, Boarder Patrol U.S. Coast Guard, and National Park Service vessels remain actively involved.

A lake firefighter has struck something underwater approximately 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale. The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to a distress call received at 6:53 am from the M/V Michipicoten that collided with something underwater and is taking on water. The vessel has 22 persons on board and carries a load of taconite. The Coast Guard reports that pumps are working to displace water from entering spaces, helping reduce the ship’s list from 15 degrees to 5 degrees. There are no signs of spillage. The Coast Guard reports the M/V Edwin H Gott is also en route to the incident.

The M/V Michipicoten was traveling east along the north shore from Two Harbors, Minnesota.
