As the new year unfolds, Lake Superior State University (LSSU) announced its 2025 Banished Words List, a lighthearted tradition that began in 1976.

The annual list highlights words and phrases deemed overused, misused, or simply unnecessary, encouraging individuals to reflect on their language choices.

Old habits can be hard to break says Dr. David Travis, LSSU President. Adding the university is  happy to serve as a resource for the court of public opinion on what should continue to be part of the English language and what needs to be put to rest.

This year’s selections include a variety of phrases that have worn out their welcome:

  • Cringe
  • Game Changer
  • Era
  • Dropped
  • IYKYK (If You Know, You Know)
  • Sorry Not Sorry
  • Skibidi
  • 100%
  • Utilize
  • Period

Among these, “cringe” has become so overused that it now elicits the very reaction it describes.

“Hearing someone say ‘someone is so cringe’ makes me cringe!” noted Ash from Newton, Alabama. Another phrase, “game changer,” was described as tired and clichéd, with Patrick from Washington, DC, stating, “Nothing is a game changer if everything is a game changer.”

The term “era,” popularized by Taylor Swift, has also made the list. Leah from Holland, Michigan, expressed her frustration, saying, “Thanks to the name of Taylor Swift’s tour, now there is an ‘era’ for everyone and everything! It’s overused and tiring.”

Other phrases such as “sorry not sorry” and “IYKYK” were criticized for their lack of sincerity and clarity.

As LSSU celebrates its 49th year of this whimsical tradition, the Banished Words List continues to serve as a reminder of the dynamic nature of communication and the impact of language on daily life.

The complete list of 2025 banished words showcases insights from those who nominated them, emphasizing the importance of being mindful in our expressions.
