Local LGBTQ+ Veteran Resources

Memorial Day is still fresh in people’s minds, and it’s the beginning of pride month.

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, research shows that LGBTQ+ veterans or current military experience discrimination in VHA facilities. They also claim that research also shows that due to discrimination, stress, and discrimination, this group of people are at a higher risk for suicide.

“Everybody’s needs are different, and the LGBTQ community obviously has their own certain set of needs, and that goes with other demographics as well, but what’s nice about the VA is that they do provide LGBTQ-centric care and resources for veterans. So whether that’s healthcare related, [or] gender affirming care, or just regular healthcare, but those services are there specifically for LGBTQ veterans to meet their specific needs. The Iron Mountain VA does have a person on-staff who works directly with LGBTQ+ veterans, and then [just] in general you have different VA hospitals and clinics around the Upper Peninsula.” – Mandy Bonesteel, Rural Outreach Coordinator with Equality Michigan.

Among gender affirming care, suicide prevention, and infertility aid, they also provide help to those of military sexual trauma, substance abuse, and partner violence.
