High School
Jared Crow no-hit the Calumet Copper Kings to give the Gladstone a 3-0 district semi-final victory Saturday afternoon at Irontown Field in Negaunee. Robert Hill was almost as good for Calumet, giving up only two hits over his seven innings pitched. Rory Anderson, playing his final athletic event as a King, gave Calumet its only runner for the first six innings as he walked in the first and stole second. The Braves got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Tyson Seymour scored on a delayed double steal. The remaining runs happened in the sixth without a benefit of a hit. The contest ended with the King’s Grant Johnson on second in the seventh.
Gladstone went on to win its third straight district title in the nightcap with an 11-1 triumph over Negaunee. The Gladstone girls defeated Negaunee, 8-1, to also claim the softball title.
In high school track, the Lake Linden-Hubbell girls won the Division Three U.P. Championship meet Saturday at Kingsford. Chassell placed sixth, Ontonagon 10th, Dollar Bay 12th, and Jeffers tied for 14th. Sienna Anderson of the Lakes took the 100-meter hurdles. Laura Lyons won the 200-meter run and the long jump. Mariah Wilmer took the 800-meter run. Jamie Hendrickson claimed the high jump. The Lakes won the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400-meter relays. Cami Daavettila from Dollar Bay won the 1600-meter run. Chassell’s Lela Rautiola took the 3200-meter run.
The Lake Linden-Hubbell boys finished seventh, with Chassell and Ewen-Trout Creek tied for 11th, Ontonagon 13th, and Dollar Bay 14th. Brendan Middleton of the Lakes won the 100-meter dash, and anchored the winning 4×100-meter relay team. Jake Witt from Ewen-Trout Creek won the shot put, and finished second in the discus.
Marquette swept the Division One UP Finals. On the boys side, Houghton placed third, and Calumet seventh. For the Gremlins, Clayton Sayen took the 200 and 400-meter runs, and anchored the winning 4×800-meter relay team. Kameron Simpkin won the Pole Vault. Calumet’s Jesse Helminen and Cooper Twardzik placed first and second in the discus throw.
On the girls side, Houghton finished sixth, and Calumet eighth. Kendra Monette of the Gremlins won the shot put. Calumet’s Hailey Wickstrom took the high jump, and Kierra Mayotte won the pole vault.
In the Division Two meet, the Hancock boys placed ninth, and L’Anse 11th. The Hancock girls finished sixth, with L’Anse 12th.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers pounded out 15 hits, and routed the Chicago White Sox 10-1 Saturday. Nicholas Castellanos, Alex Pressley, Alex Avila and Juston Upton homered. Jordan Zimmerman scattered seven hits and gave up one run over six innings, and earned the win.
The Tigers host the White Sox again this afternoon. Justin Verlander will pitch against David Holmberg. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Chris Taylor’s grand slam off Carlos Torres in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 10-8 come-from behind victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday. Jesús Aguilar, Travis Shaw and Hernán Pérez homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers entertain the Dodgers again this afternoon. Zach Davies will start against Kenta Maeda.
NHL
The Nashville Predators routed the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 in game three of the Stanley Cup playoffs Saturday night. The Penguins lead the Predators two games to one. Game four will be played in Nashville tomorrow.
NBA
The NBA championship series continues tonight at Oakland. The Warriors lead the Cavaliers one game to none.
