Waking up this morning there’s a hint that winter is in the upper peninsula. The region’s typical snowfall can begin in October and begin to ramp up during December. But the 2023 and 2024 winter so far… has seen about 25.5 inches of snow during the past three months. Looking back into Michigan Tech’s snowfall archive the last time the region saw 10 inches or less of snow for each of October, November, and December was in 1931-32. That year ended with 92 inches of snowfall.
But the region should still expect plenty of the white stuff in the coming months as 2024 gets underway. January tends to see an average of around 50 inches of snowfall during the month based on the records listed with Michigan Tech. January also holds the record for the most snowfall in a single month with 105.5 inches total in 2004.
