Contractors for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will continue work requiring closures of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock Wednesday.
The contractor anticipates restricting access to the span twice between 9 p.m. and midnight Wednesday. These closures will result in delays for vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic, and are planned to last for approximately 20 minutes each. Between closures, traffic will be allowed to clear.
Work in recent months had been occurring during the day or in the overnight hours between 12:15 and 5:15. No word was given as to why a different window is being employed tonight. With another blast of snow, MDOT and the Coast Guard expect to be lowering the bridge soon into winter position. Once locked, the lower level acts as a crossing for snowmobile traffic throughout the season.
